Secretary General calls on Ukraine to cancel or suspend recent legislation

Strasbourg, 27 January 2014 – The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, published today the following statement on the situation in Ukraine. He said:

“The initial Council of Europe assessment of the 16 January laws shows that too many provisions are clearly not in compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights. Therefore they should not apply.

Our recommendation is that Verkhovna Rada either cancels these laws or suspends them for a significant period of time, in order to allow for an inclusive process in the Parliament. The Rada will receive our analysis. Our experts are at the disposal of the authorities, to assist them in this process”.
